The Big Ten Network is looking for a Social Media Freelancer to join their team on a part-time basis in Chicago. Responsibilities will include posting content to various social media platforms (including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat) during Big Ten Football and basketball season. This is a freelance, seasonal position offering roughly 40 hours per week with a start date on/around July 16 and end date of April 30. This position will report to the Communications Manager.


  • Key contact for Big Ten Network customer service during Big Ten Football programming ensuring prompt and accurate customer service (i.e. multiple games in windows) through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and email
  • Participate in real-time monitoring, responding and moderation of online conversation
  • Monitor social media research and analytics tools to provide relevant reports identifying consumer sentiment and compiling such data for analysis
  • Contribute to testing and maintaining BTN GameFinder on a weekly basis
  • Assist in providing daily and in-game social media content to supplement and enhance Communications, Digital Marketing, Digital Media and Programming
  • Active contributor to executing, maintaining, and revising the Big Ten Network content calendar
  • Assist in creating and sharing post-event analysis recaps
  • Distribute BTN2Go and BTN Plus weekly streaming schedules to school athletic contacts
  • Support BTN’s MVPE digital initiative as well as football pregame show BTN Tailgate
  • Help coordinate/schedule photographers as part of the BTN Instagram Takeover


  • Communications, Journalism, Marketing or Sport Management undergraduate track is preferred
  • At least 1-2 years of experience in social media, communications or marketing
  • Must be able to work flexible hours, which will include weekend hours
  • Candidates must have a deep knowledge of Big Ten Football and Big Ten Basketball
  • Familiarity with Big Ten Network’s programming, talent, and brand initiatives
  • Detailed knowledge and experience on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat
  • A strong handle of grammar, punctuation, syntax, and Twitter voice
  • Excellent written communication skills are needed along with a keen editorial sense
  • Candidate must be organized, detailed-oriented, proactive and a team player
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Always connected and tuned into the latest Big Ten football and basketball news
  • Experience with research and analytics tools including and not limited to Facebook Insights and Twitter Analytics among others
  • Wordpress, HTML and Photoshop knowledge a plus
  • Passionate for social media and evolution of technology
